Zoloft Can Treat Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder, or social phobia is very common, and Zoloft is effective for treating it. Social anxiety disorder is a mental condition that is often treated with medication and cognitive therapy. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like Zoloft, are usually the first medications prescribed to individuals with social anxiety disorders. In addition, Zoloft is approved by the FDA.

Steps That You Should Take

If you are experiencing anxiety or panic attacks when you are in public or social situations, you should meet with a mental health professional. Zoloft and other medications can help to alleviate your symptoms. You should get examined by a doctor. Only a licensed doctor can prescribe medications like Zoloft.

In addition, you can get treated with therapy such as cognitive-behavioral therapy. Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any medical conditions, and if you are taking over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements, vitamins, prescription medications or MAO inhibitors, because Zoloft can interact with certain drugs. In addition, Zoloft is available in many different strengths. Your doctor may start you out at a low dose to see how you respond, and your dose can be adjusted if necessary. Your doctor will probably instruct you to take your dose once a day. Keep in mind that Zoloft should be taken at the same time daily. You can mix your dosage with 1/2 cup of water, ginger ale, lemonade or orange juice if you like. Furthermore, you should wait 4 to 6 weeks for the medication to work. If your social anxiety symptoms do not improve in 6 weeks, you should tell your doctor. If the improvement is mild, you may need a higher dose of the medication, so it is essential that you keep track of how you are feeling, especially when you are out in public.

Keep in Mind

Studies show that many patients with social anxiety reported positive results when taking Zoloft. They were relieved of their symptoms, and most people were able to tolerate the side effects, if they experienced any at all. Sometimes the side effects are minor, and they may disappear after your body gets used to the medication.

Remember that you don’t have to live with social anxiety. If your symptoms are affecting your life, and if they interfere with school, work and your personal life, you should get treated immediately. Zoloft should reduce your anxiety and calm you down, even when you are in social situations. It may even boost your mood and help you feel more positive.  There is no cure for social anxiety, but you may be able to recover from your condition if you get treated for it immediately.
